The map is derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites, operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). The pre-event images were taken before (October 04, 2018 and September 22, 2018) and the co-event image was acquired 6 hours after the hurricane's landfall (October 10, 2018 7:33 PM local time).\n\nThe map covers an area of 155 miles x 370 miles (250 km x 600 km), indicated with the big red polygon. Each pixel measures about 33 yards x 33 yards (30 m x 30 m). The color variation from yellow to red indicates increasingly more significant ground surface change. Media reports provided anecdotal preliminary validation. This damage proxy map should be used as guidance to identify damaged areas, and may be less reliable over vegetated areas and flooded areas. For example, the scattered single colored pixels over vegetated areas may be false positives, and the lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas does not necessarily mean no damage. \n\nSentinel-1 data were accessed through the Copernicus Open Access Hub. The image contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2018), processed by ESA and analyzed by the NASA-JPL/Caltech ARIA team. This research was carried out at JPL funded by NASA. \n\nFor more information about ARIA, visit: http://aria.jpl.nasa.gov", "summary": "ARIA Damage Proxy Map (DPM) 10/10/2018 produced using ESA Sentinel-1", "title": "aria_dpm_20181010", "tags": [ " \tNASA Disasters Program", "Hurricane", "Michael", "Hurricane Michael", "SAR", "ESA", "Sentinel-1", "Sentinel", "ARIA" ], "type": "Map Service", "typeKeywords": [ "Data", "Service", "Map Service", "ArcGIS Server" ], "thumbnail": "thumbnail/thumbnail.png", "url": "", "extent": [ [ -85.4753366, 26.7442788011554 ], [ -81.7780382861975, 32.4104715 ] ], "spatialReference": "GCS_WGS_1984", "accessInformation": " NASA-JPL/Caltech ARIA Team, JAXA ", "licenseInfo": " Free and available to public users; Commercial providers; Data is not research grade and should not be used for scientific research.
