Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) <\/span>maps are produced by converting pixel values to NDVI = (Red \u2013 NIR)/(Red + NIR), NIR indicates the near infrared band. The dynamically generated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) layer is an index for quantifying green vegetation. It reflects the state of vegetation health based on how vegetation reflects light at certain wavelengths.<\/span><\/p>

Normalized Differential Water Index (NDWI) <\/span>maps are produced by converting pixel values to NDWI = (green \u2013 NIR)/(green + NIR). Higher Planet scene numbers are layered over lower scene numbers. Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) provides a different view of the Earth's surface combining different bands to make water bodies more obvious. This index can be used to identify flooded areas as well as heavily saturated areas.<\/span><\/p>

Water maps <\/span>use a beta PlanetScope Flood Mapping system created in partnership between NASA GSFC and the Dartmouth Flood Observatory at the University of Colorado. This product distinguishes water covered pixels from non-water covered pixels, using an adaptive NDWI dynamic thresholding approach. Details are in a pending publication.<\/span><\/p>

Processed water map raster data include clouds (1), areas not covered by water (2), and water (3).<\/span><\/p>

Suggested Use:<\/span><\/p>

NDVI: <\/span>NDVI is commonly used to distinguish healthy/active vegetation (1) from unhealthy/dormant vegetation (-1).<\/span><\/p>

NDWI: <\/span>Thresholding of NDVI is one technique used to distinguish surfaces covered by water (-1) from surfaces not covered by water (1).<\/span><\/p>

Water Maps: <\/span>This product shows water that is detected by the sensor with different colors indicating different land cover/land use classifications<\/span><\/p>
