Summary:

ImageCat has mapped the electrical substations and power stations that are at potential risk of fire damage from the fires across the Western United States including fires in California, Oregon, and Washington. Near Real-Time fire and thermal anomaly data from the VIIRS instrument show the locations of the fires and how they've progressed during August and September 2020. NIFC Fire Perimeters from 9/17/2020 serve as the official fire perimeter on 9/17 and can be used to validate the VIIRS based fire perimeter layer.

ImageCat's Earth Observation based building type classification layer can be used to monitor the proximity of the fires to residential areas across the state. The building classification layer was created by analyzing the spectral signatures, individually and in combination, of multiple Earth Observation products. These EO products characterize human settlement, impervious surface, population, and human activity which are then associated to homogeneous structural building types. The homogeneous structural building types observed in California goes as followed: Rural development, Single Family Residential, Middle-Rise Residential, Urban development, High Urban, Very high Urban, and Industrial. The classification layer is at 15-arcsecond.

Suggested Use:

This map can be used to observe the progression of the fires relative to residential and urban areas, power stations, and electrical substations.
