Utilizing the OMPS sensor on Suomi-NPP, NASA scientists can measure the sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration from the eruption. SO2 is often used as a proxy for the location of volcanic ash. High concentrations of SO2 can also be hazardous to human health and air travel.
Suggested Use:
Green to red colors indicate higher sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations or UV Aerosol Index values
Satellite/Sensor:
Suomi-NPP Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS)
Resolution:
375 kilometers
Credits:
NASA's Direct Readout Laboratory (DRL)
