description:

Background:

This Image Service is a near-real time estimate of 1 day of precipitation accumulation derived from the IMERG data product. The IMERG product is associated with the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission is an international network of satellites that provide the next-generation global observations of rain and snow. Precipitation Processing System (PPS) at NASA Goddard processes and creates the realtime IMERG data products. “Early Run” refers to the algorithm that is applied to the near-realtime products. IMERG algorithm can be found in the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) that is available from the PPS website (http://pps.gsfc.nasa.gov/).

The Image Service is published using a Raster Mosaic populated with GeoTiffs collected from the PPS download site daily. These GeoTiffs are translated from the original Hierarchical Data Format Version 5 (HDF5) Files produced for IMERG by the US GPM Team at NASA Goddard.

Data Visualization:

Precipitation accumulation is shown using a Stretched Color Ramp (Green-Red). Minimum-Maximum Stretch type was applied using 0 for minimum (Green) and 500 for Maximum (Red). Values are shown in millimeters with a scale factor of 10 applied. For example a value of 10 is equal to 1mm of precipitation.

Update Frequency:

3 Hour latency

Suggested Usage:

Precipitation accumulation is useful in predicting flood risk, landslide hazards, and ice accumulation.

Further Reference:

Learn more about Global Precipitation Measurement mission.

Learn more about GPM's science objectives.

Learn more about GPM's applications.
