Summary:
These Black Marble radiance images were created by the NASA Black Marble Science team. The images are top-of-atmosphere radiance, which directly measures light intensity on the ground in units of nanowatts/(steradian centimeter squared). The images are scaled from 0 - 100, and show the impact of Hurricane Beryl on electric grids in and around Houston, Texas. The baseline image is from May 2024, a cloud-free, moon-free composite, and the “after" image is from July 9, 2024. In the "after" image, the color grey displays where clouds are present, and in the baseline image the grey displays where water is present. This comparison between the images is meant as a visual assessment of outage impacts from the extreme heat to aid various partners who are working to deliver emergency aids to local communities. Power outage maps like these help disaster response efforts in the short-term as well as long-term monitoring during the crucial stages of disaster recovery.
Suggested Use:
PLEASE NOTE: This is the "top-of-atmosphere nighttime light radiance" product and has not been atmospherically- and lunar-BRDF-corrected. Given July 5, 2024 was a new moon in Houston, Texas, the impacts on these products has been minimal. However, as the moon phase reaches ~50% lunar illumination, impacts of using the non-atmospherically- and lunar-BRDF corrected product may be present. The atmospherically- and lunar-BRDF- corrected product is currently not available for use due to processing challenges.

The image is in magma color scale. Yellow represents presence of more light; dark purple represents presence of less lights. In the "after" image, the color grey displays where clouds are present, and in the baseline image the grey displays where water is present. The cloud mask is conservative.
