These burned area products were generated using Copernicus Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) products, which image the earth's surface regardless of smoke conditions.

The UAF/ASF burned area product is produced by taking the logarithmic difference between a before (6/21/2019) and after (7/3/2019 and 7/15/2019) image to identify regions of change. While not all change is caused by fire, fire does result in decreased radar backscatter in many burn areas, so mapping regions where negative change is beyond a threshold value can help delineate fire activity. The SAR-derived burned areas are shown along with the Frozen Calf Fire perimeters generated by the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center (AICC) to provide a reference for how well the SAR-derived product performs.

Suggested Use:

This product illustrates how SAR-derived burned areas compare to fire perimeters provided by the AICC. These burned area products can be used to help estimate fire extent in remote areas or when smoke impedes other mapping approaches.

Satellite/Sensor:

Copernicus Sentinel-1 Sythetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Resolution: 30 meters

Credits:

ASF DAAC 2019 using GAMMA software.
