The map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites, operated by the European Space Agency (ESA), acquired before (September 1 and 2, 2020) and during the fire (September 7th 7PM, September 8th 7AM, September 13th 7PM, and September 14th 7AM, September 20th 7am local time).

The color variation from yellow to red indicates increasingly more significant change. Preliminary validation was done by comparing to independent observations by NASA's VIIRS and MODIS sensors available at the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) and fire perimeter information available at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). This damage proxy map should be used as guidance to identify burned areas.

Before - After Image Pairings

DPM Date: Before image used

9/7 DPM: 9/1/2020

9/8 DPM: 9/2/2020

9/13 DPM: 9/7/2020

9/14 DPM: 9/8/2020

9/20 DPM: 9/14/2020

Suggested Use:

This damage proxy map shows surface change with yellow to red indicating more significant change or building damage due to the explosion. The map may be less reliable over vegetated areas. The lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas does not necessarily mean no damage. Small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected by this map.

Satellite/Sensor:

Copernicus Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Resolution:

30 meters

Credits:

Sentinel-1 data were accessed through the Copernicus Open Access Hub and the NASA mirror managed by Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF).
