Service Description:

For Version 2 of the 8/15/2021 DPM: https://maps.disasters.nasa.gov/arcgis/home/item.html?id=384e80a45ad140698a21ddc74002a12a

For Version 1 of the 8/15/2021 DPM: https://maps.disasters.nasa.gov/arcgis/home/item.html?id=cb0386417ce84a04bc0d132bb560f740

NOTE: There are likely significant numbers of false positives in the mountainous and vegetated areas as well as mapped landslides. This map is most sensitive to building damage and liquefaction, but small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected.

Summary:

The Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology in Southern California, in collaboration with the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), created this Damage Proxy Map (DPM) depicting areas that are likely damaged by the Mw7.2 earthquake (Aug 14, 2021, local time) in west Haiti. The map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images on Aug 15, 2021 by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). The pre-event images were taken before (Aug 03, 2021 and July 22, 2021) the earthquake.

The image covers an area of 96 by 250 kilometers (60 by 155 miles). Each pixel measures about 30 meters across. The color variation from yellow to red indicates increasingly more significant surface change. Preliminary validation was done by comparing with the Media reports.

Suggested Use:

The color variation from yellow to red indicates increasingly more significant surface change. Preliminary validation was done by comparing with the Media reports.

This damage proxy map should be used as guidance to identify damaged areas, and may be less reliable over vegetated areas. For example, the scattered colored pixels over vegetated areas may be false positives, and the lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas does not necessarily mean no damage. This map is most sensitive to building damage, but small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected by this map. Other strong land changes such as landslides, liquefaction or flooding in areas with no buildings can also show a positive signal on the damage proxy map.

NOTE: This DPM should only be used over urban areas and is not expected to be reliable over vegetated areas where false negatives are to be expected. There are likely significant numbers of false positives in the mountainous and vegetated areas as well as mapped landslides. This map is most sensitive to building damage and liquefaction, but small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected.
