Handwerger (UCLA/JPL), and Dr. Mong-Han Huang (UMD) constructed a landslide heatmap from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter change in Google Earth Engine (https://github.com/MongHanHuang/GEE_SAR_landslide_detection). Our SAR backscatter change heatmap is made from two multi-temporal SAR backscatter intensity image stacks, composed of pre- and post-landslide event data to highlight areas with high potential landslide density. We classified potential landslide pixels using the 99th percentile value of the backscatter change. We generated the heatmap using the Heatmap (Kernel Density Estimation) in the QGIS software package. We used an Epanechnikov kernel with a 3 km radius, a scaled output value, and downsampled the 10 m Sentinel-1 GRD data to 100 m.

This map should be used as a guidance to identify areas likely affected by landslides. This is a rapid response product. We have not done any form of manual corrections to remove false positives.

Suggested Use:

This map should be used as guidance to identify landslide affected areas. Warm colors (Yellow to Red) indicated a higher landslide density. This is not a research grade product.

Satellite/Sensor:

Copernicus Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Resolution:

100 meters

Credits:

NASA GSFC Landslides Team, Copernicus Sentinel-1 data

Esri REST Endpoint:

See URL section on right side of page

WMS Endpoint:

Data Download:

https://maps.disasters.nasa.gov/download/gis_products/event_specific/2021/haiti_earthquake_202108/landslide_inventory/SAR%20Backscatter%20Change%20Landslide%20Density%20Map/
