Summary:
The eruption of Cumbre Vieja on September 19, 2021 pushed ash and aerosols into the atmosphere. Utilizing the OMPS sensor on Suomi-NPP, NASA scientists can measure the sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration from the eruption. SO2 is often used as a proxy for the location of volcanic ash. High concentrations of SO2 can also be hazardous to human health and air travel.
Suggested Use:
Green to red colors indicate higher sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations or UV Aerosol Index values
