Summary:
Thermal imaging to monitor the growth of a new lava dome in the crater of Soufrière St. Vincent Volcano. This dome is the result of an effusive eruption that began on 27 December 2020. The elevated temperature of the dome surface, relative to the surrounding ground temperatures, presents as a thermal anomaly, or hot spot, in satellite imagery. The ASTER and ECOSTRESS data were acquired at night, when the subtle hot spots are not overwhelmed by solar heating of the surface.
Changes in the size or temperature of the hot spot may indicate increases in the surface area of the lava dome, but we must also consider changes in the cloudy viewing conditions when interpreting the thermal imagery.
Suggested Use:
Thermal IR: These images can be used to detect hot spots on the Earth's surface which are showing locations of the lava dome within Soufriere Volcano.
False Color RGB: Healthy vegetation appears red in this false-color composite image, and changes in the surface area of the dome may be expressed by changes in the extent or health of vegetation. Cloudy viewing conditions obscure the dome in this ASTER scene, showcasing the need for frequent satellite observations to take advantage of temporary breaks on the clouds.
Satellite/Sensor:
Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra platform
ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) on the International Space Station (ISS)
Resolution:
ASTER Thermal IR: 90 meters
ASTER False Color RGB: 15 meters
ECOSTRESS: 70 meters
