Service Description:

Date of Images:

1/14/2022 - 1/25/2022

Date of Next Image:

Unknown

Summary:

The eruption of Hunga Tonga on January 15th was one of the largest eruptions in the last 30 years pushing ash and aerosols high into the atmosphere. Utilizing the OMPS sensor on Suomi-NPP, NASA scientists can measure the sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration from the eruption. SO2 is often used as a proxy for the location of volcanic ash. High concentrations of SO2 can also be hazardous to human health and air travel.

Suggested Use:

Green to red colors indicate higher sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations

Satellite/Sensor:

Suomi-NPP Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS)

Resolution:

375 kilometers
