Service Description:

Date of Image:

9/1/2020

Date of Next Image:

None Expected

Summary:

This preliminary map shows areas which are likely damaged in Louisiana and parts of Texas, USA due to Hurricane Laura which made landfall on 27 Aug 2020. Damage is shown by coloured pixels of 30 m in size, where yellow to red indicates increasingly significant ground surface change before and after the event. It is validated using aerial imagery from NOAA. The map may be less reliable over vegetated areas. For example, the scattered colored pixels over vegetated areas may be false positives, and the lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas does not necessarily mean no damage. This map is most sensitive to building damage, but small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected by this map.

Derived from synthetic aperture radar data acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) before (20 Aug) and after (1 Sep) the event. Analysed by the ARIA-SG team at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in collaboration with NASA-JPL and Caltech.

Suggested Use:

This damage proxy map shows surface change with yellow to red indicating more significant change or building damage due to the hurricane. The damage proxy map should be used as guidance to identify damaged areas and may be less reliable over vegetated areas. The lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas does not necessarily mean no damage. Small scale change or partial structural damage may not be detected by this map.
