Service Description:

Date of Images:

11/27/2022 - 12/8/2022

Date of Next Image:

Daily Updates as available

Summary:

The eruption of Mauna Loa on November 27, 2022 was the volcanoes first eruption since 1984. Utilizing the OMPS sensor on Suomi-NPP, NASA scientists can measure the sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration from the eruption. SO2 is often used as a proxy for the location of volcanic ash. High concentrations of SO2 can also be hazardous to human health and air travel.

Suggested Use:

Green to red colors indicate higher sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations

Satellite/Sensor:

Suomi-NPP Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS)

Resolution:

375 kilometers
